Why Google shows a warning
When you connect Gmail you'll see a screen saying “Google hasn't verified this app” . That warning is accurate, and it is worth understanding rather than clicking past.
What it actually means
Any app that wants permission to organise your mail has to pass a Google security review. It involves an independent assessor going through how the app stores and handles data, and it takes weeks. Mailsort is in that process now. Until it finishes, Google shows the warning to everyone, regardless of what the app does.
It does not mean Google found a problem. It means Google has not looked yet.
What to click
- 1. On the warning screen, click Advanced.
- 2. Click Go to Mailsort (unsafe). The wording is Google's, and it is the same wording for every app awaiting review.
- 3. Approve the permissions and you're through.
What you are actually approving
- Permission to label and move mail — nothing else
- No permission to send, reply, or delete anything
- Sender, subject and date only. Message contents are never stored
- Every move is reversible, and you can disconnect at any time
You can revoke access whenever you like from your Google account permissions, without asking us.
Rather not see a warning at all?
Microsoft has no equivalent review backlog, so Outlook and Microsoft 365 accounts connect with an ordinary consent screen and no cap on numbers.
